Why data migration deserves a second look

If you've been in the Odoo ecosystem for any length of time, you've probably heard the advice: "Don't migrate historical data. Start fresh with opening balances." It's pragmatic counsel that has saved countless projects from scope creep and budget overruns.

But here's the thing—your clients often don't see it that way.

They want their historical invoices. They need comparative reporting. Their auditors expect seven years of transaction history. And frankly, a "working rearview mirror" has real business value that's hard to dismiss.

At STML.IO, we've spent years helping Odoo partners tackle data migration in ways that are predictable, controlled, and—dare we say it—actually manageable. This blog series shares what we've learned.

What This Series Will Cover

Over the coming weeks, we'll publish a series of posts exploring the realities of data migration to Odoo. Each post will combine practical insights with our perspective on how implementation partners can turn migration from a project risk into a competitive advantage.

Coming Up:

1. Why Migrate Data? (Even When Odoo Says Not To)

The official guidance has merit, but the reality on the ground is more nuanced. We'll explore the legitimate reasons clients push for data migration—legal requirements, management reporting, audit trails—and when those reasons justify the effort. We'll also cover the scenarios where "starting fresh" truly is the right call.

2. Data Migration as an Iterative Process

Here's where most migration projects go wrong: they treat migration as a one-shot event at the end of the implementation. We'll explain why iterative migration—loading client data early and often—transforms both the migration itself and the quality of your implementation conversations. When users see their data in the new system, abstract discussions become concrete.

3. The Importance of Actionable Feedback

Every migration run generates feedback. The question is whether that feedback is actionable. We'll dive into what makes a good change report, how to surface exceptions that matter, and why audit trails aren't just for compliance—they're essential tools for building client confidence. Good actionable feedback tends to motivates the customer team, they are contributing, progress is visible, finally those small and large annoyances are dealt with.

4. Role Separation: Partner vs. Customer Responsibilities

Who owns data quality? The answer might seem obvious, but the boundary between partner and customer responsibilities in migration projects is often blurry—and that ambiguity creates project risk. We'll offer a framework for clarifying roles that protects both parties and leads to better outcomes.

5. From Migration to Integration: The Recurring Use Case

Data migration is often a one-time event, but the patterns and tools that make migration successful have broader applications. We'll explore how the same approaches enable ongoing supplier data integration, price list synchronization, and other recurring data flows that extend the value of your Odoo implementation.

6. Preparing for AI: Why Historical Data Is Your Future Competitive Advantage

Odoo is investing heavily in AI capabilities—from predictive analytics to intelligent automation. But here's what often gets overlooked: AI features are only as good as the data they can learn from. Pattern recognition requires patterns. Forecasting requires history. Anomaly detection requires a baseline of "normal." In this closing post, we'll explore how thoughtful data migration today positions your clients to extract maximum value from AI features tomorrow—re-framing migration from a backward-looking exercise into a forward-looking strategic investment.

Who Should Read This Series?

This series is written for Odoo implementation partners and accountancy firms working with Odoo. Whether you're new to migration or looking to refine your approach, we aim to provide perspectives and practices that are immediately useful.

We'll draw on real project experience—including case studies from partners who've tackled complex migrations—to keep the discussion grounded in practice rather than theory.

Why We're Writing This

At STML.IO, we believe data migration has been unnecessarily painful for too long. The tools and techniques exist to make it predictable and controlled. But tools alone aren't enough—the thinking around migration needs to evolve too.

This series is our contribution to that evolution. We hope you'll find it valuable.

The first post in the series—"Why Migrate Data?"—will be published next week. Follow us on LinkedIn to be notified when new posts go live.
